Consider veering off your usual inner-city circuit and trying something new. Here are six suburban Auckland eateries to get acquainted with:
1. The Grounds, Henderson
Henderson's newest resident, The Grounds, boasts the family-friendly vibe that many local parents have been patiently waiting for. Conveniently located on Henderson Valley Road, the sprawling 5-acre site neighbours Whoa Studios, an interactive film and performance studio bound to appease the whole family. With The Grove's Ben Bayly at the helm of The Grounds' delicious menu, children’s birthday parties just became a whole lot more appealing.
2. Kiss Kiss, Balmoral
This Balmoral stronghold has been drawing in the hungry masses since April last year. Offering casual, easy dining and an impressive cocktail list, the throwback decor reflects the laidback feel that Kiss Kiss is all about. Be sure to try the Phad Si Ew: stir-fried noodles with gai lan, soy and tofu - simple yet satisfying.
3. Little Jimmy, Manukau Road
Many locals would argue that Little Jimmy has single-handedly reinstated Epsom's cool. This modern gastro pub, perched on an otherwise forgotten corner of Manukau Rd, boasts delicious, seasonal fare and an equally impressive wine list. The newly revived space is certainly a welcome addition to the neighbourhood.
4. The Corner, Remuera
Taking over from The Villager - the grand old dame that previously held pride of place on Remuera's Upland Road - The Corner certainly had big shoes to fill. Offering punters a simple and refined bar menu as well as more substantial meals, The Corner is fast becoming Remuera's favourite local. With a 1920's inspired fit-out and the best seat in the house, this fresh new eatery deserves to be on your weekend radar.
5. Rosebank Coffee and Kitchen, Avondale
Avondale, a suburb previously devoid of many brunch options, can now claim the delightful Rosebank Cafe and Kitchen. Offering brunch fare that's right up there with the best of them, this community-minded little eatery is turning heads for all the right reasons.
6. Big Fish Eatery, Penrose
The next time you're passing through Penrose, prepare to be pleasantly surprised. Serving fresh pan Asian fare, all of Big Fish's tasty dishes are made to order. This little neighbourhood local also boasts the added bonus of a handy delivery service.
