Café of the Year hots up

Find out where to go for some of the best cafe fare in the country – regional finalists, in four categories, have been announced in the 2017 Meadow Fresh NZ Café of the Year.
For the past few months, judges have been chomping, sipping and slurping their way around New Zealand to determine the best cafes in the country. Now the 24 regional finalists have been revealed in four competition categories: Heller’s Classic Kiwi, Tararua Best Metro/CBD, Hellmann’s Best Suburban and Tuckers Ridge Pies Best Rural.
A further judging round now commences to identify the national winners of each category, which will be announced at an event in Auckland in February, along with the supreme award – the 2017 Meadow Fresh NZ Café of the Year. To check out all the regional winners and the results of the Puhoi Valley People’s Choice award – determined by public voting – go to nzcafeoftheyear.co.nz.

We start by sharing what’s on the dish team’s radar, what we’re watching, listening to and reading. Harry Butterfield puts a twist on his Nonna’s agnolotti, Malissa Fedele reminds us of the importance of fibre, and Phoebe Holden fulfils a long-held dream, sitting down with Yotam Ottolenghi. Autumn is an abundant time, we make the most with pumpkin, kūmara, cabbage, cauliflower, feijoas, apples and pears. We’re dishing up dinners for two, including a Chicken Dumpling Lasagne, alongside easy weeknight meals. We honour our mums, revisit timeless classics, and add a little baking challenge. This issue, we encourage you to slow down, to enjoy writing your shopping list, and spending time in the kitchen. Because even when life feels relentless, there’s always space to share something delicious.
