Eat, sleep: The Distinction Hotel, Dunedin

During her visit to Dunedin, New Zealand, Digital Editor Izzy Brimeau stayed at The Distinction Hotel. Here is her review of the stay, the luxurious bed and the dreamy bathroom.
STAY
Located in the former Chief Post Office, in what can be dubbed as Dunedin’s art deco district, is The Distinction Hotel. With luxurious rooms, an aptly-named restaurant, free 24/7 gym access (including classes) and stunning interiors, it’s easy to see why this is one of New Zealand’s top-rated hotels. Walking distance from the Octagon, and in amongst a street art and second-hand shop filled neighbourhood, the area’s far from short of hidden gems. During my time in Dunedin, I stumbled across various works of art and made a few stellar purchases.

SLEEP
I opened the door to find myself in a studio room the same size as my central Auckland two-bedroom flat. Not only was it spacious, it was also oozing luxury. The sizeable bed could have comfortably slept three adults – each in their own cloud-like section – especially as I didn’t move from my third, despite having the bed to myself. In front of the super-king bed sat a full lounge suite, facing a large LED TV screen. To the side of the TV there was a workspace, which I mainly used to Google where to eat.

The kitchenette was complete with a full-size fridge and, if you felt like buying 10-plus bottles of wine for a short stay, a wine fridge. A Nespresso machine and a luxury tea and coffee selection lay side by side on the counter. The squares of Whittaker’s chocolate and mini cookies were an appreciated touch.
But it was the bathroom that really took the cake. Not only was there a walk-in shower with dual shower heads, there was a bath of dreams. Being a taller girl, I often feel a little cramped in baths, unable to stretch out. This bath engulfed me. Though that could have been the excessive amount of bubble bath I used. Nevertheless, it was the perfect place to waste away an evening. My evening of choice involved a large glass of red wine, jazz music and Summer Friday’s Overtime mask – 10/10 would recommend.

EAT
Unfortunately, due to my tight eating schedule, I didn’t have the chance to dine in at Parcels restaurant. I did, of course, peruse the menu and judging by what’s on offer, I would say it’s worth stopping by for breakfast or dinner. I can, however, recommend the wine list at Post Bar, and the helpful bar staff.
