An Expedition to the Edge of the World

"This is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime journey. A mind-blowing, intoxicating experience – almost as good as being in a David Attenborough documentary."
— Chris Upton, former proprietor of Auckland’s O’Connell Street Bistro
Set sail from Dunedin’s Port Chalmers and venture deep into the wild Southern Ocean on a 15-day Subantarctic Islands expedition aboard Le Soléal. Hosted by travel curator Lance Green and operated by luxury cruise line Ponant, this journey offers more than just extraordinary views, it’s an immersion into some of the most remote, pristine ecosystems on Earth.
Each destination along the route brings you closer to nature at its most raw. Begin at predator-free Ulva Island, where native birds thrive in ancient forest canopies. Then, meet 35,000 Snares crested penguins on the rugged Snares Islands, before reaching the legendary Macquarie Island, home to elephant seals, royal penguins and skies alive with seabirds.

"Our cruise through the Subantarctic Islands was truly the trip of a lifetime... The Snares and Enderby Island delivered incredible wildlife encounters, but the absolute highlight for me was Macquarie Island."
— Anne & Herb Shaw, Canadian guests
Often referred to as the “Galápagos of the Southern Ocean,” Campbell and Enderby Islands are living examples of untouched beauty, where albatrosses soar and penguins dot the shoreline. Each carefully managed landing is designed to protect these fragile environments, with biosecurity protocols and conservation-led excursions guided by Ponant’s expert naturalists.

"The expedition crew were incredible – full of knowledge, whether it be their specialties in the flora, fauna or history of Fiordland, Stewart Island and the Subantarctic Islands."
— Chris Upton
Back on board, the contrast is striking. Le Soléal offers refined comfort, with elegant French cuisine, locally inspired menus, fine wines and thoughtful hospitality. All dietary needs are welcomed.
"I highly recommend booking your reservation through Lance Green, who made the entire journey seamless and enjoyable with his expert guidance and warm, friendly approach."
— Anne & Herb Shaw
Returning to Dunedin, you come back changed. Filled with awe, grounded by nature, and carrying memories to last a lifetime.
“Once experienced, you’ll take home a luxury experience and memories for a lifetime.”
— Chris Upton

We start by sharing what’s on the dish team’s radar, what we’re watching, listening to and reading. Harry Butterfield puts a twist on his Nonna’s agnolotti, Malissa Fedele reminds us of the importance of fibre, and Phoebe Holden fulfils a long-held dream, sitting down with Yotam Ottolenghi. Autumn is an abundant time, we make the most with pumpkin, kūmara, cabbage, cauliflower, feijoas, apples and pears. We’re dishing up dinners for two, including a Chicken Dumpling Lasagne, alongside easy weeknight meals. We honour our mums, revisit timeless classics, and add a little baking challenge. This issue, we encourage you to slow down, to enjoy writing your shopping list, and spending time in the kitchen. Because even when life feels relentless, there’s always space to share something delicious.
