Barulho – bigger and better than ever!

With a fabulous new space (right next door to their new venture, Fonda) Barulho is a guaranteed great night out.
The Dish team headed along to soak up the vibes and get stuck into some seriously good food at the re-opening of Parnell’s beloved Barulho. Supreme hosts Sarah Ginella and Nico Mendez are multi-tasking up a storm, having recently transformed the old site into Fonda, ‘a casual, neighbourhood local serving Mexican-inspired snacks, cocktails and agua frescas’, they are now opening the doors on their new 100-seater restaurant, right next door.

Loyal Barulho regulars were there in force to support one of their favourite eateries, and the mood was definitely up-beat. From the drummers to the DJ the music was in line with the food – full of flavour and joy. Sipping on Aperol Spritz and Sangria we nibbled on empanadas and sliders while keeping an eye out for the main event – the spectacular, vast paella, loaded with seafood with generous amounts of luscious aioli. Huge congratulations to Sarah and Nico, we couldn’t be more excited for them and their newly expanded offering.

We start by sharing what’s on the dish team’s radar, what we’re watching, listening to and reading. Harry Butterfield puts a twist on his Nonna’s agnolotti, Malissa Fedele reminds us of the importance of fibre, and Phoebe Holden fulfils a long-held dream, sitting down with Yotam Ottolenghi. Autumn is an abundant time, we make the most with pumpkin, kūmara, cabbage, cauliflower, feijoas, apples and pears. We’re dishing up dinners for two, including a Chicken Dumpling Lasagne, alongside easy weeknight meals. We honour our mums, revisit timeless classics, and add a little baking challenge. This issue, we encourage you to slow down, to enjoy writing your shopping list, and spending time in the kitchen. Because even when life feels relentless, there’s always space to share something delicious.
