DROP OF THE DAY - MARTINBOROUGH VINEYARD HOME BLOCK PINOT NOIR 2019

Make the most of the last few cases of Martinborough Vineyard’s highly awarded Home Block Pinot Noir 2019. From the same vineyards and vintage that produced the winery’s iconic ‘Marie Zelie’ Reserve Pinot Noir 2019, this flagship wine is earthy, spicy and savoury with a rich palate brimming with dark cherry and plum.
The wine carries its own slew of accolades including a Gold medal from the Decanter World Wine Awards, 95 Points from Bob Campbell MW, 94 Points from Cameron Douglas MS and 93 Points from top US critic James Suckling who describes it as “sleek, supple and velvety”.
MARTINBOROUGH VINEYARD’S HOME BLOCK PINOT NOIR AND PAUL MASON IN THE VINEYARD
The Martinborough wine region is celebrated internationally for its Pinot Noir. As home to some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines in New Zealand, Martinborough Vineyard has been at the forefront of creating that distinction.
In 1978, Soil Scientist Derek Milne concluded that Martinborough’s climate was astonishingly similar to Burgundy, France. He and his brother, along with a handful of locals, established Martinborough Vineyard in 1980. His vision created a new industry, and the small sleepy district found new life as a unique wine village.
Having put Martinborough and New Zealand Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays on the map internationally since its founding, the winery remains one of the leading producers of New Zealand Pinot Noir to this day, “striving for perfection with every vintage,” according to Chief Winemaker, Paul Mason. “I really see myself as the custodian of a long and prestigious tradition of handcrafted excellence at Martinborough Vineyard,” says Paul.
MARTINBOROUGH VINEYARD’S HERITAGE SPANS OVER FOUR DECADES
Martinborough Vineyard Home Block Pinot Noir 2019 is made from the vines planted immediately around the winery, including some of those original plantings which are now some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines in New Zealand. “They don’t produce much these days,” says Paul, “but what they do produce is pretty special.”
While drinking beautifully now, careful cellaring of this wine will reward those with the patience for up to 15 years.
