Beer of the Week - Emerson's Bookbinder

This week, we put extreme beers to one side and celebrated the understated elegance of Emerson's Bookbinder.
With the recent lowering of drink-driving limits in New Zealand, we’ve been paying particular attention to 'session beers' – well-balanced brews with moderate to low alcohol levels.
Lucky for us, one of our favourite beers happens to fall into this category: Bookbinder from Emerson’s Brewery in Dunedin. Bookbinder (or 'Bookie' as it’s affectionately known amongst fans), was named after two Oamaru bookbinder friends, Michael O’Brien and David Stedman of Dutybound, and is a classic English-style bitter ale that weighs in at just 3.7% alcohol.
While many beers lining the shelves these days are hopped to high heaven, Bookbinder’s floral and citrus perfume is gentle and sweet, cushioned by a soft, malty body. It finishes with just a touch of bitterness, ensuring it's smooth and dry enough to keep us coming back for more.
Bookie pairs wonderfully with red meats and strong cheeses and, naturally, a good book.
