Queenstown's No5 Church Lane's Kiwi twist on Japanese bento

Queenstown's No5 Church Lane has given a Kiwi twist to the classic Japanese bento. Introducing: the Kai Box.
Inspired by head chef Trent Watson's travels to Japan, the Kai Box offers visitors and locals in New Zealand's tourism capital a fun dining experience for long lunches or quick bites.
For $25 per person, the Kai Box showcases the best of Kiwi cuisine with South Island prime meat on offer with lamington, chop salad and broccolini, and a non-alcoholic beverage to accompany. Diners can choose between:
- Lamb neck, kumara chips and kumara puree
- Corned beef, crispy potato and red cabbage puree
- Polenta vegetables, succotash and arancini (V)
To try the Kai box for yourself, visit No5 Church Lane from 12pm to 3pm daily.

We start by sharing what’s on the dish team’s radar, what we’re watching, listening to and reading. Harry Butterfield puts a twist on his Nonna’s agnolotti, Malissa Fedele reminds us of the importance of fibre, and Phoebe Holden fulfils a long-held dream, sitting down with Yotam Ottolenghi. Autumn is an abundant time, we make the most with pumpkin, kūmara, cabbage, cauliflower, feijoas, apples and pears. We’re dishing up dinners for two, including a Chicken Dumpling Lasagne, alongside easy weeknight meals. We honour our mums, revisit timeless classics, and add a little baking challenge. This issue, we encourage you to slow down, to enjoy writing your shopping list, and spending time in the kitchen. Because even when life feels relentless, there’s always space to share something delicious.
